Denver Broncos cornerback Patrick Surtain II has a pectoral strain and could miss multiple weeks, according to reports.

Per NFL Network, the injury is considered week-to-week but could ultimately result in a stint on injured reserve, which would mean a minimum of four games missed. NFL insider Jordan Schultz reports that the injury’s expected to sideline Surtain from 4-6 weeks and that he’ll have a second opinion this week to nail down a timeline. The injury does not require surgery per the report.

Surtain suffered the injury during Denver’s 44-24 win over the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday. He left the game with a leg injury in the first half, but was able to return. He then suffered the pectoral injury on a hit before halftime that sidelined him for the rest of the game.

He strained his left arm while attempting to tackle Cowboys receiver George Pickens after a pass completion and got up from the play in clear discomfort and holding the left side of his chest.

The injury was initially announced as a shoulder injury before diagnostic imaging Monday reportedly revealed the pectoral injury.

It’s a significant blow to the Broncos that could alter one of the NFL’s best defenses in his absence. A true shutdown corner, Surtain is the reigning Defensive Player of the Year who impacts opposing game plans and decisions from opposing quarterbacks, who rarely look his way on the field.

Surtain’s absence will put pressure on No. 2 cornerback Riley Moss and require an increased role from nickel back Ja’Quan McMillian and first-round rookie backup Jahdae Barron.

The Broncos improved to 6-2 with Sunday’s win and are in first place in the AFC West, a game ahead of the 5-3 Chargers and 1 1/2 games ahead of the Chiefs prior to Kansas City’s Monday night game against the Commanders.

The Broncos will face the Texans, Raiders and Chiefs in Weeks 9-11 before a Week 12 bye.
