Niel Phillips will never forget the eighth hole at Stonebridge Golf Club.
The sophomore at Sewanee, a Division III school in Tennessee, made not one, but two holes-in-one Monday during the first and second rounds of the Chick-fil-A Invitational in Rome, Georgia. And he did it on his first hole of both rounds, too.
Phillips began the first round on Monday on the 182-yard hole, and he pulled a 6-iron and made it on his first shot of the day. He shot even-par 72 in the opening round before returning to the eighth hole in the afternoon for the second shotgun start of the day. This time, he hit a 7-iron. Different club, same result. His second ace in about 6 hours in the same spot where he made the first one.
It was the third ace of his career, the first one coming when he was a junior. It’s also believed to be the first time a college golfer has made two aces on the same hole during the same day.
Unfortunately, in the third round on Tuesday morning, the hole-in-one streak came to an end as he made a par. But Phillips has a college golf memory to brag about forever.
