Tom Aspinall thinks one former UFC heavyweight champion would have given him problems.
UFC heavyweight champion Aspinall has been near flawless in the octagon, with all but one of his wins ending in Round 1. His lone UFC loss to Curtis Blaydes came by injury after he blew out his knee, but he later avenged that by first-round TKO to defend his interim heavyweight title at UFC 304.
Aspinall (15-3 MMA, 8-1 UFC) was promoted to undisputed champion after Jon Jones relinquished his heavyweight title. He was asked if there’s any fighter, current or retired, in the UFC that he thinks he’d definitely lose to.
“Peak ‘DC’ has the worst style for me ever,” Aspinall said of Daniel Cormier on the “ShxtsnGigs Podcast.” “He’s short. I’ve said this to his face as well: short guy who just keeps walking forward, changing levels in between like grappling punches. He can knock you out. He can take you down. He’s got cardio for days. For my style, he’s a nightmare.”
Aspinall was quick to answer Daniel Cormier, who became a simultaneous two-division champion after knocking out Stipe Miocic.
“I thought about it,” Aspinall said. “He was a beast. Peak ‘DC’ was unreal.”
Aspinall will look to notch his first title defense when he takes on Ciryl Gane (13-2 MMA, 10-2 UFC) in the UFC 321 main event on Oct. 25 from Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi.
