Mateusz Gamrot is down but not out after his UFC Fight Night 261 loss to Charles Oliveira.

Gamrot (25-4 MMA, 8-4 UFC) bet on himself this past Saturday when he stepped up on short notice to challenge all-time UFC finishes leader Oliveira (36-11 MMA, 24-11 UFC) in enemy territory in Rio de Janeiro. It resulted in a second-round submission loss and a setback for the Polish fighter’s hopes in the lightweight division.

Although he was defeated, Gamrot is not deterred. In his first post-fight statement, “Gamer” said he is grateful for the experience and intends to use it as a moment of growth to become “a different person” (via Instagram):

Gamrot, 34, had won four of five fights prior to the encounter with Oliveira. He had never been finished prior to facing “Do Bronx” but left by being submitted for the first time in MMA.
