The Minnesota Vikings are placing starting running back Aaron Jones on injured reserve with a hamstring injury, NFL Network reports.
His placement on IR dictates that Jones will miss a minimum of four games.

Jones suffered the injury during Sunday’s loss to the Atlanta Falcons. The severity and timeline of his recovery were unclear prior to his reported placement on injured reserve. It’s not clear if he’s expected to miss longer than four weeks.
Jordan Mason’s time to shine
The injury projects to thrust Jones’ backfield running mate Jordan Mason into a workhorse role. While Jones was listed as a starter, Mason out-touched Jones, 27-16 through Weeks 1 and 2 and out-gained him in yards from scrimmage, 113-90.

Mason has averaged 4.1 yards per carry compared to 3.5 for Jones. Now, as he did filling in for Christian McCaffrey in San Francisco last season, Mason will have the opportunity to take over as a lead back, a role in which he thrived for the 49ers while averaging 5.2 yards per carry.

Veteran Ty Chandler and undrafted free agent Zavier Scott are listed behind Jones and Mason on Minnesota’s depth chart.
The Vikings reportedly signed veteran free agent Cam Akers earlier Tuesday before the news of Jones’ move to injured reserve. A former starter for the Rams, Akers played as a backup running back in Minnesota last season.
The Vikings are also dealing with injuries at quarterback. Starter J.J. McCarthy is expected to miss multiple weeks with an ankle injury. Veteran backup Carson Wentz is expected to start in Week 3 against the Bengals. The Vikings reportedly signed former Falcons starting quarterback Desmond Ridder earlier Tuesday to provide depth behind Wentz.
