Jason Demetriou has agreed a three-year deal to become London Broncos’ new head coach as the club press for a Super League return.

Demetriou, 49, was previously head coach of the South Sydney Rabbitohs in the National Rugby League in his native Australia.

On Sunday, current head coach Mike Eccles confirmed the Broncos’ victory over Widnes Vikings in their final game of the Championship season would be his last match in charge.

Broncos also confirmed on Monday their application to be part of the new-look 14-team Super League in 2026, adding they would be “recruiting several internationals” from the NRL.

The club are proposing a new ownership group including Australia legend Darren Lockyer, former Leeds Rhinos chief executive officer Gary Hetherington and businessman Grant Wechsel.

Lockyer previously promised to bring in the experienced Demetriou if a takeover materialised.

“A successful London club will help the Super League achieve maximum growth and potential,” Lockyer told the club website.

“To be a truly national competition and to grow the game’s exposure, finances and talent pool, the game should be represented in the nation’s capital, and the largest financial market in the world.

“London is the largest greenfield market for rugby league growth; if anchored by a strong and sustainable club, the benefits to rugby league could be huge.”

London Broncos were one of the founding Super League sides but are playing in the Championship after relegation last season.
