While his Philadelphia Eagles picked up the win, Thursday night wasn’t exactly A.J. Brown’s time to shine.

The All-Pro Eagles receiver didn’t see a target from quarterback Jalen Hurts, much less make a catch in the first half of Thursday’s 24-20 win over the Dallas Cowboys. He didn’t touch the ball until 1:51 remained in the game.

Hurts hit Brown for an 8-yard gain on second down to set up third-and-3 as the Eagles sought to run out the clock. Philadelphia picked up a first down on the ensuing play, then went into victory formation to seal the win.

And that was it for Brown. In Philadelphia’s first game since winning the Super Bowl in February, Brown tallied a single catch for 8 yards and was largely a non-factor in Philadelphia’s offense. This is a guy who’s made three Pro Bowls and has tallied at least 1,079 yards and seven touchdowns in each of this three seasons with the Eagles.

“You know, that’s not something I can control,” Brown said after the game, per Penn Live. “What I can control is my effort for when the ball does come my way.”

The Cowboys, Brown said, shaded to his side of the field, taking away opportunities. That freed up tight end Dallas Goedert, who led the team with seven targets.

When pressed if he finds it difficult managing his own expectations as one of the best receivers in the league while only being target once, Brown said “that’s something I can’t control.”

While a win over the Cowboys is always sweet for the Eagles, Brown’s lack of participation will certainly be topic topic of conversation in Philadelphia. And it won’t be the only one.

Philadelphia’s Pro Bowl defensive tackle, Jalen Carter, was ejected before the first play from scrimmage for a retaliatory spit on Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott. It was a stunning moment in an NFL opener filled with wild moments that also included an hour-plus weather delay in the second half.
