The Bill Belichick era at UNC started off with a bang — at least on the opening possession.

Following much fanfare and in front of numerous North Carolina legends, Belichick made his much-hyped debut as UNC’s head football coach Monday night in a Week 1 home game against TCU. The Belichick era started with a North Carolina touchdown drive.

North Carolina received the opening kickoff and immediately set the tone with a 9-yard run from running back Caleb Hood on the first play from scrimmage. Three plays later, first-year UNC quarterback Gio Lopez found sophomore receiver Jordan Shipp for a 39-yard gain on a deep ball into TCU territory.

Three plays later, it was once again Hood’s time to shine. The redshirt senior took a handoff from Lopez and ran 8 yards through the TCU defense for a touchdown.

It added up to 83 yards on seven plays and a 7-0 lead to kick off the Belichick era in Chapel Hill.

This was met with much approval from the fans in attendance at Kenan Memorial Stadium, including UNC icons Michael Jordan, Lawrence Taylor and Roy Williams.

It was just one drive in a single game in a 12-game season. But it’s always nice to get off on the right foot.
