Salford Red Devils have been given permission to make “a limited number of changes” to their 17-man squad to face Castleford Tigers on Friday, despite again being placed under a sustainability cap.

The club were placed back under cap restrictions with immediate effect on Tuesday amid continued uncertainty about the financial health of the club.

A delay receiving funds following last month’s takeover by an investment group led by Swiss banker Dario Berta has left players still waiting to be paid for February.

The Red Devils confirmed the situation in a statement and said funds were “currently pending regulatory clearance”.

Despite this, head coach Paul Rowley will be able to field a stronger side for the trip to Castleford than earlier this season when they were thrashed 82-0 by St Helens in their first game of the 2025 Super League campaign.

In a statement, the Rugby Football League said: “Salford Red Devils were given permission to make a limited number of changes to the squad they had registered when placed under a previous £1.2m sustainability cap in February, following a number of assurances provided to a meeting of the RFL’s Special Measures Committee also attended by Rugby League Commercial.”

Despite being able to name a side comparatively stronger than the one filled with reserves that faced Saints, the Red Devils will still be without suspended Jayden Nikorima and Joe Shorrocks.
