BOSTON, MA — Brock Nelson is not on the trade market – at least not yet.
With the Islanders outside the playoff picture, speculation about the pending free agent is growing, with multiple teams reportedly showing interest in the veteran.
Nelson, who has topped 30 goals in each of the last three seasons and is on pace for 25 goals and 53 points this year, is in the final year of his six-year, $36 million contract.
General manager Lou Lamoriello has affirmed the team’s commitment to Nelson numerous times, despite trade rumors.
“He’s an Islander and he’s certainly an integral part of our team,” Lamoriello said to NHL insider Pierre LeBrun on Thursday.
Given his status as one of the Islanders’ most important players, the organization’s hope remains to extend Nelson, rather than trade him, but Nelson is yet to make a decision.
As a result, the entire trade market has been held up.
“He’s kind of holding up a lot of things. There’s so many teams looking for center help,” LeBrun said. “But there’s still no clear indication from the New York Islanders that Brock Nelson will actually be made available.”
The March 7th NHL Trade Deadline puts pressure on Nelson and the Islanders to decide his future, as the team looks to make a decision before time runs out.
