The dejection on Seth Jones face was palpable, the resignation in his voice telling. After the Chicago Blackhawks lost 2-1 to the Utah Hockey Club Tuesday night, the veteran defenseman sounded off on the state of things in Chicago.
“I think we’re the exact same team right now as we were in Game 1,” Jones told reporters. “It’s pretty evident out there. We haven’t made any strides to be a better, more simple hockey team, and it shows. We don’t get a lot of wins because of that. This has been almost four years of (being at the) bottom of the league, so it’s not just this year, for me at least.”
Now there’s probably an agenda behind all of this, and it has to do with Jones wanting to play for a contender after signing an eight-year deal in 2021, and to be fair, Jones is part of the problem. But his point is well taken. If you’re going to go through the process of a complete rebuild, as Mike Babcock once said, there’s going to be pain.
The Blackhawks are feeling all of that pain right now. It will be a while before things get better.
