On Wednesday, the Pittsburgh Penguins placed former two-time San Jose Sharks forward Matt Nieto on NHL Waivers.

Nieto has played 31 games for Pittsburgh this season and has one goal and two assists.

The defensive-minded forward has never been a high-scoring threat in the NHL, as his specialty is the penalty kill. Nieto is in his second season with the Penguins, averaging 12:14 TOI per game, up from the 23-24 season (11:37).

The Penguins hope to make a late-season push to the playoffs, but that doesn’t seem likely. Pittsburgh is nine points out from the second wild card spot and has played two more games (60) than the Columbus Blue Jackets (58), who currently hold the last playoff spot.

According to reports, Penguins GM Kyle Dubas is in the market for getting younger and shipping out big contracts.
