Jaime Munguia will get an immediate chance to avenge his only knockout loss.
The former super welterweight world champion is set to rematch Bruno Surace in the main supporting bout for the Saul “Canelo” Alvarez vs. William Scull undercard on May 3 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Ring magazine, which is owned by Turki Alalshikh, first reported the news. Alvarez vs. Scull headlines a Riyadh Season show, the promotional entity operated by Alalshikh and Saudi Arabia’s General Entertainment Authority.
Munguia (44-2, 35 KOs) was seemingly miles in front on the scorecards when he was brutally knocked out by Surace in a major upset this past December. It was the Mexican’s first career stoppage loss in his fourth fight of the calendar year.
Munguia went 2-2 in 2024. After recording a career-best win over John Ryder in January, he then lost his unbeaten record to Alvarez in May but rebounded with a 10th-round knockout of Erik Bazinyan in September.
Surace (26-0, 5 KOs) entered into the bout with Munguia on the back of a year-long layoff. The little-known Frenchman was priced as high as a 12-to-1 underdog by bookmakers. He tore up the script in Munguia’s Tijuana homecoming match, though, and produced a top candidate for both Upset of the Year and Knockout of the Year.
After losing to Alvarez in May, Munguia teamed back up with his old coach, former four-division world champion Erik Morales. Munguia has now left Morales to join Alvarez’s trainer, Eddy Reynoso, in a significant move that sees former opponents turn into teammates.
