On Friday, the Vancouver Canucks completed a blockbuster trade with the New York Rangers. The trade involved sending center J.T. Miller, defenceman Erik Brännström and the rights to defenceman Jackson Dorrington in exchange for center Filip Chytil, defenceman Victor Mancini, and a conditional first-round pick in the 2025 NHL Entry Draft. As for the condition of the first-round pick, if the Rangers selection is top-13 this year, the pick transfers to 2026 and becomes unprotected.

Overall, there are a lot of mixed emotions when it comes to trade. Some believe the Canucks did not receive enough in return, while others will point to the deal being an addition by subtraction which will benefit the locker room. Ultimately, it will take a while before a winner can be determined, as it is possible some assets from this deal may be flipped at a later date.

With the trade now complete, it is time to get to know the newest members of Vancouver’s organization. As mentioned, the Canucks received Chytil and Mancini back, as well as a first-round draft pick. While the first-rounder is an important piece, right now, we will just be focusing on Chytil and Mancini as they will be playing for the organization this season.
Starting with Chytil, he is a 25-year-old left-shot center who has played 378 regular season games in the NHL. Initially drafted 21st overall in 2017, Chytil has 20 points in 41 games this season and is averaging 14:20 of ice time. Chytil will be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the 2026-27 season and belongs to the same agency as Quinn Hughes, Elias Pettersson and Tyler Myers.
This season, Chytil has spent most of his time as the Rangers third-line center. He has also seen time on the power play, where he has collected three points. Listed at 6’2″, 210lbs, Chytil has an even-strength xGF% of 52.43 this season, with New York outscoring opponents 26-22 when he is on the ice at even strength.
Like every player, there are risks when it comes to Chytil. He has a history of concussions and has missed several games this season with upper-body injuries. His health will be something to monitor moving forward, as Vancouver will need him in the lineup as much as possible if they want to make the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs.
The other player coming back is 6’3″, 229 lbs, right-shot defenceman Victor Mancini. Initially drafted in the fifth round of the 2022 NHL Entry Draft, the 22-year-old already has 15 NHL games under his belt. In those 15 games, he has five points while averaging 15:05 of ice time.
Mancini is an intriguing prospect. He projects as a third-pair defender who can play a physical game and isn’t afraid to jump up into the rush. Based on the Canucks current roster, it looks like Mancini will be headed to the AHL, where he will join the Abbotsford Canucks.
