It’s been a big couple of weeks for those seeking out the next middle-of-nowhere golf destination. Just a few weeks after the preview opening of Rodeo Dunes in Colorado, the next project by Michael Keiser, co-owner of Sand Valley, has been announced with the soft opening of Wild Spring Dunes.

The first course at Wild Spring Dunes, designed by Tom Doak, is set on rolling land that was used for iron ore in East Texas, starting with an elevated first tee shot that sits 40 feet high before descending into the course. It’s a 2,400-acre property set on sandy soil, weaving among pine trees, open meadows and spring-fed creeks, about 20 miles north of Nacogdoches and 147 miles from the Houston airport, 175 miles from the Dallas airport or 72 miles from the Shreveport, La., airport.

Doak also likened the terrain to a mix of Pine Valley, on its natural sandy soil and towering pines, and Pinehurst. He called the land some of the best that he’s worked on in about 10 years. Keiser was brought into the project by Texas businessman Brett Messerall, who found the site after taking a trip to Sand Valley and thinking that Texas needed a similar golf development. After two weeks of bringing Keiser onto the site, there was an agreement for Keiser to have controlling interest in the project.

Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw have routed the second course at Wild Spring Dunes and clearing is underway on the land that contains beautiful hillsides, meadows and pines. The property has some remarkable elevation, perhaps reminiscent of the Appalachian foothills.

Wild Spring Dunes will have a resort and a real estate component. Houses are available now. There will be one- and four-bedroom cottages for the public to stay in, which will be ready in 2027.
In addition to Wild Spring Dunes and Rodeo Dunes, Keiser’s portfolio will also add Old Shores, also designed by Doak, which is about 30 miles north of the Panama City airport.
