As the night’s grow darker and we move into winter, we thought it would be a good opportunity to undertake a review of the League Two season so far, including those teams and players that are lighting up the division whilst also looking at those who we expected more from.
Team of the Season
Port Vale
The Valients currently sit atop the League Two table having amassed 30 points from their 14 games so far this season and are currently on a 5 match winning run in the league. After taking the reins in the second half of last season, Darren Moore couldn’t save Port Vale from League One relegation, however after a shaky start to life in League Two in which only 1 point was secured from their first three league games, they have found their form and look like the team to beat as we head towards Christmas.
Player of the Season
Andy Cook (Bradford City)
Is currently the League Two top scorer with 8 goals so far this season as the striker is almost single handily keeping Bradford in the play-off hunt. Since joining the Bantams permanently in 2021, Cook has scored an impressive 65 goals in 140 appearances, equating to nearly a goal every 2 games. It is still a surprise that Cook has not been snapped up by a higher division team, however for Bantams fans they will be hoping he remains to keep alive their promotion push.
Surprise of the Season
Chesterfield
After strolling to the National league title last season, Chesterfield have continued the momentum on their return to League Two, currently residing in the play-off places. The Spireites are also the league’s top scorers so far this campaign with an impressive 28 goals, with Will Grigg (7), James Berry-McNally (6) and Dilan Markanday (5) contributing with 18 of those strikes. With their attacking style and multiple source of goals, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Chesterfield maintaining their promotion push into the later stages of the season.
Biggest Underachievers
Tranmere Rovers
Expectations on Birkenhead had increased over the summer that Rovers could mount a serious promotion challenge after some shrewd recruitment and backed by a vociferous crowd at Prenton Park. However, it has not proved to be, as the league’s lowest scorers (only 8 goals scored) are currently languishing in 19th position and are currently more likely to be sucked into a relegation fight than make a concerted effort at promotion. Finding goals in this team or going into the transfer market in January for proven firepower is going to be critical to their season’s aspirations.
Team to Watch
AFC Wimbledon
After narrowly missing out on the play-off’s last season, the Dons have made a steady start to their League Two campaign after picking up 6 victories in their first 11 games. They also have up to 3 games in hand on the teams around them, which if they can turn into victories, will push them into the play-off places at the very least. In striker Matt Stevens, they also have a player who can score goals at this level which will be vital if Wimbledon are to mount a promotion charge.
