Rob Font vs. David Martinez Noche UFC preview
Martinez (12-1 MMA, 1-0 UFC) will find himself sharing the octagon with his third opponent for this event after bookings against Carlos Vera and Quang Le fell through. The latter was due to rebooking Martinez to face Font (22-8 MMA, 12-7 UFC) when Raul Rosas Jr. withdrew due to injury. Martinez brings his eight-fight winning streak into this one, as he enters on the heels of his successful UFC debut in March – a first-round finish of Saimon Oliveira. Font will look to make it three in a row, as he comes in following wins over Kyler Phillips last October and Jean Matsumoto in February.
Rob Font vs. David Martinez Noche UFC expert pick, prediction
The co-main event for UFC Noche features an impromptu bantamweight fight between Rob Font and David Martinez.
With Raul Rosas Jr. being forced to withdraw from his fight with Font, the UFC matchmakers shuffled this Saturday’s slate by slotting Martinez into the picture from his initial booking against Quang Le.
Martinez makes for an interesting prospect given the dichotomy between his action-fighting sensibilities and his background as a doctor, but this could be a classic case of too much, too soon.
I can see Martinez surprising Font with a mix of early explosions and leg kicks, but we’ve yet to see the young Mexican paired up with anyone meaningful who has the solid fundamentals and active jab that his veteran counterpart brings to the table.
Add in the quiet grappling edge for Font and the frequency at which I see him getting to his favored collar tie positions standing, and I can’t help but back the New England Cartel alum in this spot.
The official pick is Font by unanimous decision.
