Hornets cancel Sports Betting theme night with Heat guard Terry Rozier under federal investigation for gambling

The Charlotte Hornets have canceled a sports betting theme night with former guard Terry Rozier linked to a federal gambling investigation. The team was slated to host the promotion March 17, the day Rozier and the Miami Heat were in town. But the team canceled the promotion Wednesday, per the South Florida Sun Sentinel.

Rozier, who played for the Hornets from 2019 to 2024, is under investigation by federal authorities for his actions during a game in the 2022-23 NBA season when he was still a member of the Hornets. Prior to a game against the New Orleans Pelicans that season, a bettor placed nearly $14,000 on unders involving Rozier’s statistics. Rozier left the game after just nine minutes due to a foot injury, causing all the under bets to win, per documents acquired by ESPN.

Rozier has not been linked to placing bets and has not been charged or accused of any wrongdoing, but remains under investigation. The investigation is trying to determine whether Rozier “manipulated his performance as part of an illegal sports betting scheme,” the Wall Street Journal wrote in January.

The investigation into Rozier is reportedly linked to the gambling probe that resulted in former Toronto Raptors forward Jontay Porter being banned from the NBA for life. Porter was investigated for his actions in two NBA games, in which bettors placed large amounts on his unders. Porter left one of those contests due to an injury. He left the other with an illness.

In its investigation, the NBA determined Porter leaked “confidential information to sports bettors” and then limited his participation in one or more games for betting reasons.

When asked why the Hornets removed the promotion Wednesday, the team did not mention the gambling probe, simply telling the Sun Sentinel the promotion was “no longer happening on that day.” It’s unclear whether the Hornets plan to reschedule the event.

The Hornets have a number of other promotional dates on their schedule during the 2025-26 NBA season, including breast cancer awareness night, pride night and HBCU day.
