Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay expects quarterback Matthew Stafford to start Sunday against the Houston Texans. McVay provided the update to reporters on Monday.
Stafford has been dealing with a back injury throughout the preseason, but McVay doesn’t expect it to sideline him for the Rams’ season opener.

Stafford missed most of training camp with what NFL Network reported in August was an aggravated disc. The Rams did not confirm the precise nature of Stafford’s injury that required epidural injections to manage, according to the report.

Stafford participated in practice in a limited capacity for offensive drills for the first time on Aug. 18, five days before Los Angeles’ preseason finale against the Cleveland Browns. He’s since continued to practice and returned as a full participant on Aug. 21.

Stafford, 37, is returning for his fifth season as the Rams’ starting quarterback. The back injury, in addition to his age as a 16-season NFL veteran, has sparked concern in Los Angeles ahead of the start of the season. Upon his return to practice in August, McVay described Stafford’s condition as a “very fluid” situation.

The Rams have been consistently competitive with Stafford at quarterback. They won a Super Bowl in his first season with the team in 2021 and have made the playoffs in each of the last two seasons. The Rams are expected to compete for the NFC West crown again this season after winning the division with a 10-7 record in 2024.
Stafford’s health is key to those plans. The Rams and Stafford restructured his contract this offseason to pay him $84 million over the next two years of a previously signed extension through the 2026 season.
