The Florida Panthers are going to be without one of their key defenders for an extended period of time.

The NHL announced on Monday that Panthers defenseman Aaron Ekbald has been suspended for 20 games for “violating the terms of the NHL/NHLPA Performance Enhancing Substance Program.”

Ekblad was not on the ice for Florida’s practice on Monday morning at the Baptist Health IcePlex, and now we know why.

Florida’s regular season schedule has 18 games remaining, which means Ekblad’s suspension will carry over into the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Additionally, according to the NHL, “Under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, the suspension is accompanied by mandatory referral to the NHL/NHLPA Program for Substance Abuse and Behavioral Health for evaluation and possible treatment.”

Ekblad released a statement through the NHLPA, which read:

“As the NHL announced, I have been suspended for violating the NHL/NHLPA Performance Enhancing Substances Program. The news that I had failed a random drug test was a shock. Ultimately, I made a mistake by taking something to help me recover from recent injuries without first checking with proper medical and team personnel.

“I have let my teammates, the Panthers organization and out great fans down. For that, I am truly sorry. I have accepted responsibility for my mistake and will be full prepared to return to my team when my suspension is over. I have learned a hard lesson and cannot wait to be back with my teammates.”

So far this season, Ekblad had three goals and 30 assists through 56 games with the Panthers.

This is a breaking news story that will be updated when new information is made available.
