Flyers forward Scott Laughton was also named a target the Maple Leafs are looking at.
The Toronto Maple Leafs continue to examine the trade market ahead of the Mar. 7 deadline and Brayden Schenn is reportedly on their list of targets.
Toronto needs a few additions, including a depth center and a bottom-pairing defenseman. According to TSN’s Darren Dreger on Insider Trading, Maple Leafs GM Brad Treliving has interest in Schenn, St. Louis Blues’ captain.

“We look at Brayden Schenn as being a great fit in Toronto because of the player and because of the winning pedigree,” Dreger reported.
“You look at the prospect pool in Toronto and you see Fraser Minten or Easton Cowan. You’ve got Nikita Grebenkin. You’ve got Ben Danford coming. I mean, there are other assets that Brad Treliving can use. And he’s most definitely interested in the captain of the Blues.”
The 33-year-old has 12 goals and 21 assists for 31 points in 58 games this season. Schenn averages 17:37 of ice time under Blues head coach Jim Montgomery. Schenn won the Stanley Cup with Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube in St. Louis in 2019.
The veteran forward has three more years remaining on his contract with an annual average value of $6.5 million.
According to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, a few NHL teams have discussed uniting the Schenn brothers—Brayden and Luke—and using them in their playoff push. Friedman added that this fits the Maple Leafs’ “MO.”
During TSN’s Insider Trading segment, Dreger also mentioned Scott Laughton as a name Toronto is interested in.
“The ask is a little bit less,” Dreger said. “It’s a first-round draft pick or an equal valued prospect, unless Philadelphia has to take a player or a contract back, and then it’s a first, plus.”
The 30-year-old has 11 goals and 16 assists in 55 games with the Flyers this season, averaging 14:51 of ice time. He has one more year after this one at a $3.5 million cap hit.
Toronto currently has just over $2.2 million in cap space with Calle Jarnkrok ($2.1 million) and Jani Hakanpaa ($1.47 million) on long-term injured reserve.
TSN’s Chris Johnston also discussed John Tavares’ contract situation with Toronto.
“It sounds like there have been discussions throughout the season between his cam and the Leafs. I think they have a good understanding of what that contract needs to look like for Tavares,” Johnston said.
“But at this point in time, it does not sound like that is close. The term given to me was, “doubtful,” in terms of a potential outlook to see this deal done by the trade deadline on Mar. 7.”
Tavares is in the final year of a seven-year, $77 million contract. He has 48 points (22 goals, 26 assists) in 50 games this season, averaging 18:21 of ice time.
