Nearly a year after being traded to the Calgary Flames by the Vancouver Canucks, Andrei Kuzmenko is on the move again. This time, he’s heading to the Eastern Conference. Frank Seravalli of DailyFaceoff reported that Kuzmenko will be heading to the Philadelphia Flyers alongside the Flames’ first-round pick of the 2019 NHL Draft, Jakob Pelletier. Calgary will also be sending their 2025 second-round and their 2028 seventh-round picks to Philadelphia. In exchange, the Flames will receive 2018 first-rounder Joel Farabee and 2017 first-rounder Morgan Frost.

Rumours of a trade emerged when Kuzmenko was held out of the lineup in the Flames’ 4–1 victory against the Anaheim Ducks. The Russian forward, who scored 39 goals in his debut NHL season with the Canucks, has been snakebitten this season. Currently, he has four goals and 11 assists in 37 games played. Last season, he was moved after an eight-goal effort in 43 games with Vancouver.
Farabee and Frost are both players who will look to build on past seasons as they are granted a change of scenery. Farabee hit a career-high in points last season with 50 in 82 games played. Frost notched his career-high in the 2022–23 regular season with 19 goals and 27 assists in 81 games. As two former first-round picks, this forward duo could help Calgary’s push for a playoff spot in the coming months. With Calgary’s 4–1 win against the Ducks tonight, Vancouver is now back out of a playoff spot without any games in hand. They face off against the Dallas Stars tomorrow night.
This is the last year of a two-year, $5.5M AAV contract that Kuzmenko signed with Vancouver on January 26, 2023. As of right now, he’ll be a free agent once July 1 rolls around this year. Given Flyers Head Coach (and former Canucks Head Coach) John Tortorella’s treatment of more offensively-minded players like Matvei Michkov, it will be intriguing to see how Kuzmenko fits into his new team’s system.
