The Los Angeles Chargers added an offensive tackle at the trade deadline to address their hobbled line.

Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, they traded for Trevor Penning from the New Orleans Saints. Terms of the deal weren’t initially reported.

A full-time starter since 2024, Penning projects to slot into a starting role with the Chargers, who have lost both starting tackles to season-ending injuries.

Pro Bowler Rashawn Slater suffered a season-ending patellar tendon injury in training camp. Joe Alt, the No. 5 pick in the 2024 draft, underwent season-ending surgery after suffering his second high-ankle sprain on his right ankle Sunday.

Penning, 26, is in his fourth NFL season. A first-round pick in 2022, he’s played in 46 games for the Saints, including 29 starts.

The Chargers acquire Penning on the heels of a 6-3 start that has them a game behind the first-place Denver Broncos in the AFC West and in playoff position. The prospect of competing for the playoffs with backups at both tackle spots was daunting, so the Chargers prioritized an upgrade and made the deal just before Tuesday’s 4 p.m. ET deadline.

It’s not immediately clear where Penning will slot in, but he’ll join an offense that’s among the league’s best on the ground and in the air and be tasked with helping keep quarterback Justin Herbert upright.

Through nine weeks, the Chargers rank sixth in passing offense, 10th in rushing offense and fifth in total offense. Their second-half schedule features games against the Steelers, Eagles, Chiefs, Cowboys and Broncos as they look to secure a place in the postseason.
