Old rival says Jon Jones 'very intelligent' at managing career, picking opponents

Quinton Jackson lauds his old rival, Jon Jones.

“Rampage” was submitted by Jones in their light heavyweight title fight in 2011. Jones never lost in the octagon outside of a disqualification blemish in 2009, but he’s recently been under fire after opting to retire and relinquish his heavyweight title before unifying it with Tom Aspinall – then returning to the testing pool two weeks later.

Jones was quick to react to the no contest between Aspinall and Ciryl Gane in Saturday’s UFC 321 headliner and turned his attention to light heavyweight champion Alex Pereira. “Rampage” dismissed the claims of Jones ducking Aspinall but also thinks he’s very smart in his approach.

“I don’t think there’s anybody out there right now that can really beat Jon Jones. But that being said, Jon Jones is very intelligent with his decision making of who he fights as his opponents,” Jackson said on his JAXXON Podcast. “I don’t think he was worried about Tom Aspinall like everybody thought he was, but he knows what type of fight he’ll take to Alex Pereira. Come on, let’s not be stupid.

“He knows what type of fight he’ll take to Alex Pereira. He’s not going to stand and bang with him. I don’t see it. If he does, I’ll drop $1,000 dollars. Look what he did to Ciryl Gane the first time. He just went out there and choked him. That’s the same type of fight that he wants to give to Alex. He doesn’t care about the entertainment. He cares about his legacy only.”

Pereira is game to fight Jones. After reclaiming his light heavyweight title with a quick TKO of Magomed Ankalaev at UFC 320, Pereira called out Jones for the White House event in June.
