Defensive end Aidan Hutchinson and the Detroit Lions have agreed to a four-year, $180 million contract extension, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport was among the first to report the deal, though the financial details of Hutchinson’s new contract were not immediately available. Schefter reported the deal is worth $180 million, with $141 million guaranteed.
That $141 million is the most ever guaranteed to a non-quarterback. Given his excellence on the field, it was expected Hutchinson’s extension would rate among the highest in the NFL.

Hutchinson, 25, was limited to five games last season after suffering a broken tibia and fibula when his left leg collided with teammate Alim McNeill during a Week 6 win over the Dallas Cowboys. At the time, he led the NFL with 7.5 sacks, adding 19 tackles, 17 quarterback hits and seven tackles for loss.
Detroit’s first-round pick (No. 2 overall) in 2022 out of Michigan, Hutchinson started all 17 games in each of his first two NFL seasons, averaging 10.5 sacks. Coming in 2025, he had registered 28.5 sacks during his NFL career and was named to the Pro Bowl in his second season, when he totaled 11.5 sacks.
During training camp, Hutchinson dismissed any concerns that his injury would make him tentative on the field or created any lingering concerns. He was hit in the same area where his leg broke previously on a goal-line drill and said there were no issues.
“It was right smack dab where Alim hit me a few months ago,” Hutchinson told reporters, via the Associated Press. “I got up and shook it out. When you can get leg-whipped, you start to have that confidence where, ‘I have a steel rod in my leg and that thing’s not going anywhere.’”
Hutchinson has lived up to that promise this season, registering six sacks and four forced fumbles in seven games.

Prior to Wednesday’s reported extension, Hutchinson had two and a half seasons left on his rookie contract. Hutchinson originally signed a four-year deal with the Lions that took him through the 2026 NFL season, but the team added a fifth-year option to his contract in April.
Hutchinson is a cornerstone of the Lions’ defense, so far fulfilling the expectations of being a high draft pick who was also a popular local college star.
Detroit has made signing its young stars to long-term extensions a priority over the past year, putting them among the top-paid players at their respective positions. Hutchinson joins defensive tackle McNeill, offensive tackle Penei Sewell, receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown and safety Kerby Joseph as foundational players signing lucrative long-term contracts.
