Pensacola Catholic boys golf, West Florida's Abby Vernier win FHSAA district titles


Pensacola Catholic boys golf won its fifth straight district title, while Abby Vernier shot a 65 to win a District 1-2A girls title.

Some familiar faces from the Pensacola area finished at the top of the pack in Tuesday’s golf district championships.

The Pensacola Catholic boys won their fifth straight district title at the District 1-1A championship at Eagle Springs Golf and Rec Park in DeFuniak Springs, while West Florida senior Abby Vernier was the low individual medalist at the District 1-2A girls championship at Sandestin Resort & Club in Destin.

The Crusaders top four golfers finished with a combined score of 306, nine strokes ahead of Northview. Both teams qualified for the Region 1-1A championship, which will take place at Pensacola Country Club on Nov. 4.

Pensacola Catholic had four golfers in the top 10, with junior Wilmer Mitchell shooting a 75 to tie for first before losing a playoff to Walton’s Brody McCormick to decide the low individual medalist.

The Crusaders Clark Brandt (t-3rd, 76), Edmund Daniels (t-8th, 77) and Ian Morris (t-10th, 78) all finished in the top 10.

Northview’s Jack Boutwell (t-3rd, 76), Miles Smith (t-3rd, 76) and Luke Godwin (t-10th, 78) also finished in the top 10.

Vernier leads West Florida to regionals

Vernier shot a 65 to finish as the low individual medalist and district champion, beating South Walton’s Lily Martin by four strokes. This is the lowest round by a Pensacola area girlsa golfer this fall.

West Florida’s team also qualified for the Region 1-2A championship for the second straight year, which will take place on Nov. 4 at Quail Heights Country Club in Lake City. McKinsey Mayne (t-8th, 104) joined Vernier in the top 10.

The Jaguars finished in second with a score of 415. South Walton won the district title with a score of 362.

The defending PNJ Girls Golfer of the Year, Vernier is a University of North Florida commit. As a junior, she tied for second at the district meet, fourth at the regional meet and third at the state meet.

Pine Forest’s Anna Rudd shot a 96 to finish fifth, automatically qualifying for regionals. Pensacola’s Evana Lin shot a 101 to finish sixth.
