Fletcher's Cole Slater closes fast to lead Senators to surprise victory in District 2-3A

Three Fletcher players broke par as the Senators topped three higher-ranked teams to win the high school District 2-3A golf tournament on Oct. 27 at the Stillwater Golf and Country Club. 

Fletcher beat Beachside and Ponte Vedra by seven shots at 1-under 287. All three teams will advance to the Region 1-3A tournament on Nov. 3 at Twin Rivers Golf Club in Oviedo, with the Sharks as an at-large team. 

Senators senior Cole Slater played his last five holes at 4-under, with an eagle at No. 16, and won the individual title with a 4-under 68. Teammate and fellow senior Mason Seaton finished second with a 70 and Jackson Runquist tied for third with a 71. 

Fletcher won the Gateway Conference tournament by 33 shots last week. 

Ponte Vedra entered the district tournament ranked first among Class 3A teams; Tocoi Creek, which finished fourth, was eighth, Beachside 10th and Fletcher 15th. 

Jonah Nacional was the low Beachside player with a 71, tying for third, and James Nagle led Ponte Vedra with a 72, tying for seventh. 

Brady Dougan and Ambrose Kinnare both shot 71 for Tocoi Creek to earn at-large individual berths in the regional tournament. 

Fleming Island cruises at Palatka 

Two players shot in the 60s for Fleming Island, led by Tyler Mawhinney’s 66, and the Golden Eagles got their bid for a third state title in a row off to a good start by romping in the District 2-2A tournament on Oct. 28 at the Palatka Golf Club at 2-over 282, beating Clay by 44 shots. 

Mawhinney birdied five of his first 10 holes to lead the Eagles to their third consecutive district title. Fellow senior Ryan Houck finished second with a 67 and William McCready was fourth with a 72. 

Michael Rattigan of Wolfson (71) finished solo third to lock up one of the individual spots for the regional tournament on Nov. 4 at Fleming Island. Turnery Hersey of Palatka (74) earned the other berth. 

Jack Newell (76) was the low player for Clay. It was a fierce battle for the second regional qualifying spot with Palatka (one shot behind the Blue Devils), Wolfson (six back), and Menendez and Middleburg (eight behind) close behind. 

Providence freshmen stand out 

Ethan Grossman and Jack Cole tied for medalist at 4-under 67 to lead Providence to the District 4-1A title on Oct. 28 by 10 shots over Episcopal at the Golf Club of Fleming Island. 

Grossman, a junior, birdied Nos. 11, 12, 13 and 14, and Cole, a freshman, birdied five of eight holes during one stretch. Alexander Stewart (73) finished seventh and another freshman, Gavin King (76) tied for 10th. 

The Eagles were led by Aubry Fellows (71), who finished solo fifth. Baker Eller (72) was sixth. 

Beckham Cummings of St. Johns Country Day and Nico Vasto of Bolles tied for third at 2-under 69. 

Girls: Ponte Vedra beats Nease

Nina Santiago posted a 71 at Eagle Landing to lead Ponte Vedra to the District 2-3A title at Eagle Landing by 14 shots over Nease. Santiago finished solo fourth and Stella Moritz (73) was solo fifth. Sophia Cavanagh of Nease was the medalist with a 68, edging Sofia Rivera of Beachside by one shot and teammate Hazel Peters by two. … Lily Chiang birdied four of her first six holes and went in to shoot 67 at the Fernandina Beach Golf Club to lead Stanton to the District 3-2A title by 30 shots over Bishop Kenny. Chiang topped Elle Reisner of Fernandina by seven shots, with teammate Alyssa Hardy (76) coming in third. … Danielle Dailey of St. Joseph Academy won the District 5-1A girls individual title by four shots at the Chiefland Country Club. … Chloe McGrath of Bolles and Sahanna Chokshi of Episcopal tied for medalist at even-par 71 at Fleming Island but Bolles’ depth won out for the team title as four players broke 80 to beat the Eagles by 58 shots at 18-over 302. Grace Brefitt and seventh-grader Chloe Pierce each posted 76 for the Bulldogs. Eighth-grader Honor Donaldson of Providence (75) finished third for one of the two individual spots. … Ryan Donaldson of Live Oak Suwannee had six birdies and eagle-two on a par-4 hole at the Quail Heights Country Club to win the individual title in District 2-2A by 16 shots over Lake City Columbia’s Rayna Hardin. The Tigers (347) won the team title over Crawfordville Wakulla by 95 shots.

Boys: Colson Hale leads Fernandina Beach 

Colson Hale shot 71 and Sam Chenoweth 73 to lead Fernandina Beach to the District 3-2A title at the Fernandina Beach Golf Club. The Pirates beat Bishop Kenny by 17 shots. … Alachua Santa Fe nipped Live Oak Suwannee by two shots in the District 2-2A tournament at Wakulla Sands. Trent Spires of Santa Fe tied Chase Fleischer of Tallahassee Lincoln (72) for medalist. Carter Cannon of Suwannee and Bryce Matthews of Lincoln (73) tied for third. … P.K. Yonge edged Gainesville Oak Hall by four shots in the District 5-1A tournament at the University of Florida’s Mark Bostick Golf Course. Carson Collins of St. Joseph Academy (81) tied for fourth.
