Carson Wentz’s season is over after the Minnesota Vikings officially placed their quarterback on injured reserve Monday. He is set to undergo season-ending surgery to repair a shoulder injury in his non-throwing arm.
Wentz led the Vikings in their 37-10 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers on Thursday night, but he was in clear pain throughout that contest at SoFi Stadium. He was sacked five times, and he said after the game that it “quite possibly” was the worst pain he’s played through during his career, per the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

Wentz first went down with a shoulder injury in his left arm during the team’s game against the Cleveland Browns on Oct. 5 in London, causing him to wear a shoulder sleeve in the past two games. According to the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Wentz actually tore his labrum and fractured the socket in his left shoulder in that contest in London.
Wentz went 15-of-27 for 144 yards with a touchdown and an interception in Thursday’s loss, and he was seen incredibly frustrated on the sidelines while battling through the injury. One particular outburst of his, in which he was seen launching his helmet after taking a sack, drew the ire of Amazon Prime Video broadcaster Kirk Herbstreit. He called on Wentz to “try to hold some of that emotion in.”
“I asked him multiple times where he was at,” Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell said after that game, via the Star Tribune. “He said he was good and wanted to keep going. It did seem like he was in pain there a couple of times, a few times.”
Wentz will finish the season with 1,216 passing yards, six touchdowns and five interceptions. The 32-year-old will undergo surgery in the near future, though he and his wife are expecting their fourth child in the coming days. Wentz signed a one-year deal with the Vikings this past offseason to back up J.J. McCarthy, who was expected to finally start for the franchise after he missed his entire rookie season with a torn meniscus.

But McCarthy has been battling an ankle sprain he sustained in Week 2, leading to Wentz starting for the Vikings over their last five games. McCarthy was back at practice Monday, and he is expected to play Sunday against the Detroit Lions, according to The Athletic’s Alec Lewis and Dianna Russini. The Vikings also have rookie Max Brosmer on their roster, though the team will likely look to add a third quarterback in the near future.
The Vikings will enter Sunday’s contest at Ford Field with a 3-4 record, having lost three of their last four and sitting last in the NFC North. Though the season isn’t lost yet, McCarthy — who has only played in two regular-season games since the team took him No. 10 overall out of Michigan ahead of the 2024 campaign — has an uphill battle to get his team back into contention in the division and make a second straight postseason appearance.
