Patchy Mix marijuana tests causes differing takes among regulators almost two years later

Patchy Mix’s final Bellator victory remains a win in the eyes of major online databases, but regulatory bodies are offering a difference of opinion concerning marijuana test results.

On Thursday, combat sports database Tapology received a notice from the French Mixed Martial Arts Federation (FMMAF) that Patchy Mix’s May 17, 2024, split decision win over Magomed Magomedov had been overturned to a loss due to a failed drug test. Tapology issued a statement that they would not overturn the result, but would put a note on Mix’s record instead.

Mike Mazzulli informed MMA Junkie on Thursday that the failed test was for marijuana. The director of the Mohegan Tribe Department of Athletic Regulation, Mazzulli, ran independent drug testing for Bellator. He said the Mohegan Tribe and the FMMAF worked together to regulate the event and said his own program’s day-of drug test, run through the SMRTL lab in South Jordan, Utah, came back negative. Mazzulli said he submitted the results to the FMMAF.

Mazzulli was president of the Association of Boxing Commissions and Combative Sports (ABC) at the time the event transpired, and the official ABC database will also maintain the result as a win for Mix.

FMMAF, France’s governing body for mixed martial arts, has yet to respond to a request for comment by MMA Junkie.

Mix acknowledged the situation in an Instagram comment Thursday writing, “Weed ain’t no performance enhancing drug. Only in Paris,” with laughing emojis.

A lot has transpired over the 17-plus months since Mix vs. Magomedov took place. Bellator officially dissolved in a merger with PFL, and Mix signed with the UFC. Mix has appeared twice for the promotion, going 0-2 with two decision losses.
