Scorecard

Virat Kohli was dismissed for ducks in consecutive innings for the first time in his one-day international career as Australia beat India by two wickets in the second ODI in Adelaide to clinch the three-match series.

India superstar Kohli, who has scored a record 51 centuries in the format, was pinned lbw fourth ball by Australia seamer Xavier Bartlett following his eight-ball duck in the series opener in Perth on Sunday.

Having retired from Tests and T20s, these matches have been the 36-year-old’s first internationals since India’s Champions trophy win in March and his first cricket at any level since the Indian Premier League final on 3 June.

Though Kohli’s form has dipped in recent years, he scored 218 runs at an average of 54.50 at the Champions Trophy, including 100 not out against Pakistan and 84 in the semi-final against Australia.

In Adelaide he came in at 17-1 in the seventh over, left his first two deliveries outside off stump, advanced to defend his third and was struck in front by his fourth delivery from right-arm seamer Bartlett.

Before the knock he averaged 65 at the Adelaide Oval, with five centuries in 12 innings across formats, and he waved to the crowd on the way off having been given a warm ovation.

India went on to post 264-9, former captain Rohit Sharma coming through a difficult start to top score with 73 from 97 balls, but Australia utltimately won with 22 balls to spare.

After number three Matthew Short made 74, Cooper Connolly added 61 not out to steer home the chase after Mitchell Owen fell for 36, Bartlett three and Mitchell Starc four in a late wobble.

Starc earlier took 2-62 as he builds towards the Ashes series against England, which starts on 21 November. Fellow seamer Josh Hazlewood was unfortunate to go wicketless through 10 overs that cost 29.

Of the other Test players, Travis Head was uncharacteristically restrained for 28 from 40 balls before ballooning a catch to mid-on.

Wicketkeeper Alex Carey was bowled for nine by off-spinner Washington Sundar while Matt Renshaw, who some are tipping to open the batting against England, made 30 from 30 balls.

The series concludes on Sunday in Sydney before five T20s.
