Roob's Eagles Stats: A Jalen Hurts special edition after another masterpiece
Whenever Jalen Hurts has one of these special, unforgettable, historic performances – like the 319-yard, four-touchdown game in Washington in 2023, the four-TD game against the Steelers in 2022, the Super Bowl in February – we like to break our weekly Eagles Stats piece into two parts.
A Jalen edition and a non-Jalen edition!
Sunday certainly qualified as special and unforgettable, as Hurts completed 19 of 23 passes for 326 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions in the Eagles’ 28-22 win over the Vikings at U.S. Bank Stadium.
Here’s our Special Edition Jalen Hurts Stats after the greatest regular-season performance of his career.
1. Hurts’ 108.9 passer rating is highest in Eagles history through seven games. The previous high was Carson Wentz’s 108.1 in 2018. Hurts is only the third quarterback ever with 70 percent completion percentage, 11 or more passing TDs and one or fewer interceptions through seven games. The others are Alex Smith in 2017 and Drew Brees in 2018.
2A. The Vikings went into the game Sunday with the No. 2 pass defense in the NFL, allowing just 157.6 yards per game. Hurts became only the third player in history with a perfect 158.3 rating against a team ranked first or second in pass defense going into the game. Former Eagle Ken O’Brien did it with the Jets against the top-ranked Seahawks in Week 9 of the 1986 season and Kerry Collins of the Giants did it in Week 16 of the 2002 season against the 2nd-ranked Colts defense.
2B. And this is an odd one, but the most-accurate games of Hurts’ career and three of the five-most accurate games have come against the Vikings. He completed a career-high 83.9 percent in a 2022 win at the Linc, 82.6 percent Sunday and 78.3 percent in a win at the Linc in 2023. Only Aaron Rodgers has completed 78 percent of his passes in more games against the Vikings – and he’s faced them 31 times. Hurts has faced them three times. Hurts’ 81.8 career completion percentage is highest in history vs. the Vikings (minimum 50 attempts). Chad Pennington is second at 77.9. Hurts’ 123.6 passer rating is also highest ever vs. the Vikings. Gary Cuozzo, a New Jersey native who played for the Colts, Saints, Vikings and Cardinals in the 1960s and early 1970s, is second at 117.4.
3. Hurts completed 82 percent of his passes Sunday for 326 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions against the Vikings. He’s the first quarterback in Eagles history to complete 82 percent of his passes for at least 300 yards and three TDs with no INTs. Even if you take out the interceptions and passing yards, only Hurts and Donovan McNabb have had a game completing at least 80 percent of their passes with three TDs. McNabb did it in 2002 vs. the Cards and 2007 vs. the Lions. Hurts is the 23rd QB in NFL history with an 82-325-3-0 game.
4. Hurts became only the third Eagles quarterback ever to fashion a perfect passer rating. Donovan McNabb did it against the Lions in 2007 (81 percent, 381 yards, 4 TDs, 0 INTs) and Nick Foles against the Raiders in 2013 (79 percent, 406 yards, 7 TDs, 0 INTs). Only 31 other quarterbacks have ever had a 158.3 (minimum 20 attempts). The only other QB with a 158.3 vs. the Vikings is Jared Goff with the Rams in 2018.
5. Hurts’ 14.2 yards per attempt Sunday is 6th-highest in Eagles history and 3rd-highest in the last 50 years, behind the Foles Raiders game in 2013 (14.5) and the Donovan game against the Lions in 2007 (14.7). Hall of Famer Sonny Jurgensen has the two-highest yards-per-attempt games in Eagles history – 16.3 against the Cowboys in 1962 and 15.3 against the Cowboys in 1961. Hurts is only the fifth QB ever to complete 82 percent of his passes, average 14 yards per completion, throw three TDs and pass for at least 325 yards with no interceptions. The others are Johnny Unitas of the Colts in Atlanta in 1967, Peyton Manning with the Colts vs. the Broncos in 2004, Tom Brady with the Patriots in Miami in 2007 and Jared Goff last year against the Jaguars.
6. Hurts now has 44 career games with a passer rating over 100. Only four quarterbacks have had more in their first six seasons – Patrick Mahomes (57), Russell Wilson (52), Dak Prescott (45) and Josh Allen (44). Hurts could have as many as 10 more starts this year. In his last 24 games, Hurts has a 108.3 passer rating – highest in Eagles history by a QB over any 24-game span. He has 31 touchdown passes and four interceptions in those 24 games with a 69.6 completion percentage.
7. Hurts’ 79-yard touchdown pass to DeVonta Smith was the longest offensive touchdown of the Nick Sirianni Era and the Eagles’ longest touchdown pass since Hurts’ 82-yarder to DeSean Jackson in a 37-17 loss in Dallas in Hurts’ third career start in 2020. The longest previous offensive TD during Sirianni’s five years with the Eagles was Gardner Minshew’s 78-yarder to A.J. Brown against the Saints in 2023. The Eagles’ longest offensive play since 2021 is Quez Watkins’ 91-yard catch that didn’t go for a touchdown against the 49ers in 2021. Watkins is now on the Eagles’ practice squad.
8A. With one interception in 195 attempts this year – and two INTs in his last 487 pass attempts going back to the Saints game in Week 3 last year – Hurts is now 8th-best in NFL history with one INT every 53.4 pass attempts in his career (minimum 2,000 attempts). He’s just behind Lamar Jackson (one every 53.620) and Russell Wilson (53.623).
8B. Hurts is only the second quarterback in history with two interceptions in a span of 19 starts. Aaron Rodgers had two INTs during a 19-game span with the Packers over the 2018 and 2019 seasons. Only Hurts has completed over 68 percent of his passes with two or fewer INTs in any 19-game span.
9. With his 37-yard TD pass to A.J. Brown on 4th-and-3, Hurts now has four career 4th-down touchdown passes of at least 30 yards, the 2nd-most in NFL history. He also had a 32-yarder to Greg Ward against the Packers in 2020 at Lambeau after replacing Carson Wentz in his final appearance as an Eagle and 41-yarders against the Giants to DeVonta Smith in 2022 and to Brown in 2024. The only player with more TD passes of at least 30 yards on fourth down is Andy Dalton, who had five from 2013 through 2021, including a 66-yarder to former Eagle John Ross with the Bengals in 2019 against the 49ers and a 49-yarder to former Eagle Marquise Goodwin with the Bears against the Ravens in 2021. The longest 4th-down TD pass in Eagles history was a 57-yarder from Brian Mitchell to Brian Dawkins on a fake punt vs. the Texans in 2002.
10. Hurts now has 155 combined rushing and passing touchdowns in 73 career starts. Only five quarterbacks in NFL History have recorded more combined touchdowns in their first 73 games: Patrick Mahomes (188, 179-9), Dan Marino (173, 170-3), Aaron Rodgers (175, 159-16), Josh Allen (166, 129-37) and Daunte Culpepper (157, 129-28). So Hurts has produced more touchdowns in his first 73 starts than 35 of 36 quarterbacks in the Hall of Fame.
Ridiculous Bonus Stat A: Until Sunday, the only time two quarterbacks drafted by the Eagles threw for 300 yards on the same day was Dec. 5, 2004, when Donovan McNabb passed for 357 yards in an Eagles loss to the Packers and A.J. Feeley threw for 303 yards in a Dolphins loss to the Bills.
Ridiculous Bonus Stat B: Most 300-yard passing games by quarterbacks drafted by the Eagles for other teams: Randall Cunningham (7), Frank Tripucka (5), Carson Wentz (4), Matt Barkley (3), Bob Berry (3), Jack Concannon (2), Kevin Kolb (2), Nick Foles (1), A.J. Feeley (1).
