Brandon Aubrey is good.
But is he Shohei Ohtani good? The Dallas Cowboys kicker set an NFL record with the fifth 60-plus yard field goal of his relatively short career on Sunday, drawing some outsized comparisons from Tom Brady in the process.

The Cowboys called on Aubrey against the Commanders when a second-quarter drive stalled out at the Washington 43-yard line, setting up fourth-and-12. It was a no-brainer decision from Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer. Aubrey, remarkably, is virtually automatic from that distance.

As Aubrey walked to the field to set up the field goal, Brady and his Fox broadcast partner Kevin Burkhardt sang Aubrey’s praises.
Brady: “You’re already in Brandon Aubrey Range.”
Burkhardt: “When aren’t you?”
Brady: “Exactly. This is Shohei Ohtani territory right here.”
Aubrey proceeded to deliver on the hype, sending the ball 61 yards through the middle of the uprights on a kick that would have been good from considerably longer.
Aubrey’s previously connected on field goals from 65 and 64 yards and twice from 60. Justin Tucker’s NFL record-long of 66 yards remains out of his grasp. But claiming that record is as own seems to be just a matter of time.

That may not be “Shohei Ohtani territory.” But Aubrey is threatening to overtake GOAT kicker status in just his third NFL season.
And he’s prompting the widely proclaimed quarterback GOAT to compare him to whom many would call the baseball GOAT, two days after Ohtani posted arguably the greatest individual performance in baseball history.
And when the Fox broadcast returned from a commercial break, Brady showered Aubrey with more GOAT praise, this time comparing him to basketball’s all-time greatest shooter.
“We called him last year the Steph Curry of kickers, because there is nothing that’s out of range for him,” Brady said.

The Shohei and Steph comparisons are an obvious stretch. But they speak to the value Aubrey provides as he expands the boundaries of what a kicker can do.
