Welcome back to The Feed, where the air is crisp, the leaf rule is in effect and yet we’re still hesistant to try on Good Good’s latest sweatshirt. More on that in a bit, but first let’s meet up with LIV Golf big dawg, Bryson DeChambeau, who was joined by some, er, splashy company this week.

“Breaking 50 … I’ve watched so many episodes and now it’s my turn to take on the challenge with good old Bryson.”

That’s what Steph Curry had to say before teeing off in the latest (and greatest?) episode of Bryson DeChambeau’s ‘Break 50.’ According to DeChambeau, the NBA’s all-time three-point leader was the most requested guest on his smash-hit YouTube series, and this week golf fans got what we’ve been asking for as the pair teed it up at Lake Merced Golf Club in not-so-sunny San Francisco. Despite the cloudy vibes, did it live up to the hype?
Well, things certainly started with a Mike Breen “BANGGG!” as Curry roasted a 320-yard drive to four feet on the first. The Warriors’ legend then drained his putt for eagle to get the boys on the board. The duo stayed hot throughout much of the outward nine, including the second, where DeChambeau nuked a 245-yard 5-iron (yes, we know, his lofts) just past the pin and Curry drained the 12-footer for eagle. Needless to say, if you come to YouTube to watch relaxing, relatable golf, this is not that, but what you will find are two extremely gifted uber competitors feeding off each other in pursuit of an entirely self-imposed goal. If that isn’t sports in a nutshell, we don’t know what is.
Throughout, the pair have several interesting conversations about their mentalities as professional athletes, including a poignant chat about leadership and bouncing back from disappointment. That conversation is notable because a certain corner of the Golf Twitter picked up on it, believing DeChambeau took a shot at Rory McIlroy when he spoke about missing “three-footers” to “lose major championships.” If you want to read about more that, I expand on it here, but long story short, this is even more of a nothingburger when watched in context to the rest of the episode. Go outside and touch grass, people.

From there, the air show continued as Bryson DeChambeau shared the story of his only ever hole-in-one and Curry discussed his teenage summers walking 36 in the Charlotte heat. The pair clearly have chemistry both as human beings and golfers and, frankly, it’s a blast to watch them tear Lake Merced apart, especially Curry, who was dialed in from the opening whistle. DeChambeau contributed his fair share, though, including an blind 35-yard pitch-in for eagle on the fifth as the pair set the mark for lowest nine-hole total in ‘Break 50’ history.
But ‘Break 50’ wouldn’t mean much if it was just nine holes. The real question is whether Curry and DeChambeau could become the first duo in ‘Break 50’ history to actually, well, break 50 (DeChambeau previously accomplished the feat, but while playing alongside two fellow YouTubers in Grant Horvat and Garrett Clark). We’re not going to spoil the surprise, but let’s just say it’s a great watch stem to stern and we get to see the pair click into competition mode down the stretch as the margins get tight. It just goes to show you can take the players out of the game, but you can’t take the game out of the players.

Bob Does Sports
Bob Does Sports golf square off in a three-on-one match against Akshay Bhatia while Bobby Fairways attempts to shatter the mythical 80 barrier. The guys also spent some time on a recent podcast questioning our treatment of poor Fat Perez, who got unfairly lumped in with Bob and Joey when we covered their recent round at Bethpage Black. FP, we’re sorry and we love you … but unfortunately that thumbnail is going to live on forever.
Bryan Bros.
Bryson and Steph weren’t the only ones trying to break 50 this week. Wesley and George also chased that dragon at night using only flashlights. There’s a golf horror movie script lurking in there somewhere.
