Former England head coach Steve McNamara has joined Warrington Wolves as part of Sam Burgess’ coaching team.

McNamara, 54, was most recently in charge of fellow Super League club Catalans Dragons until his departure in May.

“The club has huge potential, especially with the number of talented young players coming through,” he told the club’s website.

“My aim is to bring my experience to help the group keep improving and to build consistency in how we train, prepare and perform.”

He will be part of Warrington’s set-up for 2026 as they try to improve upon their disappointing eighth-placed finish this year, having finished third in Burgess’ first season in charge.

McNamara was in charge of Catalans for nearly eight years and led the French club to Challenge Cup glory in 2018 and then the League Leaders’ Shield in 2021.

They reached the Grand Final in both 2021 and 2023 under McNamara, only to lose to St Helens and Wigan Warriors respectively, and he left his position after a poor start to the 2025 season, culminating in a 40-0 loss at St Helens.

He was England’s head coach between 2010 and 2015 after a previous Super League role with Bradford Bulls and he had coaching stints in the NRL with Sydney Roosters and New Zealand Warriors.

Warrington’s director of rugby Gary Chambers said: “His experience and expertise will be invaluable to our rugby programme going forward.”
