Count Mike Tomlin is among those surprised that the Cleveland Browns shipped starting quarterback Joe Flacco to a division rival in desperate need of help.
Flacco was dealt with a 2026 sixth-round draft pick to the Cincinnati Bengals last week for a fifth-round draft pick in 2026. After Joe Burrow went down, Jake Browning showed he wasn’t the solution to the Bengals’ quarterback issue.

Yet, why Browns general manager Andrew Berry believed making such a deal within the division was a good idea was a head-scratcher.
“To be honest, it was shocking to me,” the Pittsburgh Steelers head coach said on Monday. “Andrew Berry must be a lot smarter than me or us because it doesn’t make sense to me to trade a quarterback that you think enough of to make your opening-day starter to a division opponent that’s hurting in that area.
“But that’s just my personal feeling.”

The Browns, with rookie Dillon Gabriel as the new starting quarterback, fell to 1-5 after a 23-9 defeat at the hands of Tomlin and the Steelers in Week 6. The Bengals, meanwhile, put up a fight against the Green Bay Packers, but ultimately fell, 27-18. Flacco would go 29-for-45 with 219 passing yards and two touchdowns in his Cincinnati debut.
When asked for his thoughts on what Tomlin said, Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski didn’t bite, saying, “I don’t have a comment on that.”

While Tomlin was puzzled on the Browns’ end of the trade, he did say that it made sense from the Bengals’ side and expects a “savvy” Flacco to be “significantly better” with more time to learn the offense ahead of the Steelers’ Week 7 game on Thursday night in Cincinnati.
