Eagles snap counts: Splitting up Jalen Carter's snaps vs. Giants

Eagles defensive tackle Jalen Carter suffered a heel injury during the week and did not play in Thursday night’s 34-17 loss to the Giants at MetLife Stadium.

The Eagles obviously missed him.

This is the second game Carter has missed this season. He also missed the opener after he was ejected before playing a snap for spitting on Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott.

Not only is Carter one of the Eagles’ best defensive players but he also plays the most snaps (by far) among Eagles defensive tackles. Here’s a look at how the Eagles have split up the reps at the position in the two games Carter has missed this season:

Week 1 Week 6
Moro Ojomo 55/61 (90%) 62/69 (90%)
Jordan Davis 53/61 (87%) 51/69 (74%)
Byron Young 22/61 (36%) 37/69 (54%)
Gabe Hall 5/61 (8%) 8/69 (12%)
Ty Robinson Inactive 19/69 (28%)

The biggest uptick came for both Young and Robinson, who both played their career highs in snaps by a wide margin. Young played 37 snaps and his previous career high was 24 with the Raiders in 2023. Robinson played 19 snaps after playing a combined 3 snaps in his NFL career before Thursday night.

Robinson, 24, is a fourth-round rookie from Nebraska. He was a healthy scratch in Week 1, didn’t play on defense in Weeks 2 or 3 and played just three snaps over the previous two weeks. But he got some run in this game. He did make one play, when he batted down a pass at the line of scrimmage on third down in the fourth quarter to force a punt.

Meanwhile, Ojomo’s 62 snaps are a new career-high and was at 90% in this game and in Week 1. Those 51 snaps for Davis is the third-highest total in his career.

Other defensive notes

• Quinyon Mitchell lasted just 13 snaps before leaving the game with a hamstring injury. Cooper DeJean led all corners with 65 snaps. After that, Adoree’ Jackson played 57 of 69 and Kelee Ringo played 41 of 69. Before Mitchell’s injury, the Eagles actually benched Ringo in favor of Jackson. But when Mitchell was forced out, both Jackson and Ringo were on the field for nickel downs.

Here’s a look at their coverage numbers, per ProFootballFocus:

Adoree’ Jackson: 9 targets, 5 catches, 38 yards, 1 PBU
Kelee Ringo: 5 targets, 4 catches, 73 yards, 2 penalties

• At linebacker, Zack Baun and Jihaad Campbell each played 62 of 69 snaps (90%). Jeremiah Trotter ended up playing 3 defensive snaps. Nakobe Dean made his 2025 debut after being activated from the PUP list but did not see any action on defense. He did play 6 snaps on special teams.

• No defensive player was out there for the entire game but Andrew Mukuba got the closest, playing 66 of 69 snaps, while Reed Blankenship played 62 of 69. At one point, after Blankenship and DeJean collided, it was Marcus Epps who replaced Blankenship. Epps played 7 defensive snaps in this game and has seemingly passed Sydney Brown, who played 3, on the depth chart.

• The edge rusher rotation: Jalyx Hunt (43 snaps — 62%), Azeez Ojulari (29 snaps — 42%), Josh Uche (27 snaps — 39%), Patrick Johnson (22 snaps — 32%), Za’Darius Smith (17 snaps — 25%). It’s surprising to see Smith at the bottom of that list after he had been playing fairly well. Johnson had his first-career sack in this game. But it’s clear the Eagles desperately need Nolan Smith to return from injury; that should happen most likely after the bye week. But this is a position where Howie Roseman might continue to look to add.

Offensive notes

• Jalen Hurts and all five of his offensive linemen played all 57 offensive snaps. That includes left guard Brett Toth, who made his third-career start in place of Landon Dickerson (ankle).

• A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith played 55 of 57 snaps, followed by Jahan Dotson (43/57 snaps, 75%) and John Metchie (3 snaps).

• Saquon Barkley, who had knee soreness during the week, played 46 of 57 snaps (81%). Barkley had two explosive runs to start the game and then the run game really dried up. A.J. Dillon played 8 snaps and Will Shipley played 3. Tank Bigsby has yet to play a single offensive snap in five games.

• At tight end, Dallas Goedert played 51 of 57 snaps (89%) and had a big-time performance with 9 catches for 110 yards and a touchdown. Without Grant Calcaterra (oblique) in this game, Kylen Granson played 13 snaps, Cameron Latu played 7 and Fred Johnson got 1 snap as an inline tight end/extra tackle.
