Some remarkable turnover stats and chasing an NFL record in Roob's Eagles Stats
Nick Sirianni passed a Hall of Famer, Jalen Hurts is approaching a franchise record and the Eagles are riding one of the longest streaks in NFL history.
Stats? We’ve got stats!
Here’s our Week 2 edition of Roob’s Eagles Stats, and it’s jammed with stuff we looked up because nobody else will!
1. It’s not easy to climb the all-time NFL head coach winning percentage rankings when you’re already fifth. But Nick Sirianni did exactly that on Sunday. Sirianni improved his career regular-season win-loss record to 50-20, increased his career winning percentage from .710 to .714 and passed Hall of Famer George Allen, who was 116-47-5. Today, that would be a .705 winning percentage, but when Allen coached, ties didn’t count as half a win and half a loss, they were just eliminated from the equation, and the NFL never changed any coach’s record retroactively. So Allen is still officially listed at .712. In any case, Sirianni moved ahead of Allen and now has the 4th-highest winning percentage of any coach in NFL history. He trails only three other Hall of Famers, none of whom has coached in the 46 years. Guy Chamberlain was 58-16-7 (.784) in the 1920s in six seasons with the Canton and Cleveland Bulldogs, two seasons with the Frankford Yellow Jackets and one year with the Chicago Cardinals. Chamberlain coached Philly’s Yellow Jackets to a 14-1-2 record and the 1926 NFL Championship. Also still ahead of Sirianni are two guys you may have heard of: John Madden (103-32-7, .759) and Vince Lombardi (96-34-6, .738). If the Eagles win their next eight games or go 13-2 the rest of the year, Sirianni would pass Madden.
2A. The Eagles have been plus-one in turnover margin in both games so far and they’ve now been plus-one or better in nine straight games, tied for the 9th-longest streak in NFL history and the 3rd-longest in the last 25 years behind the Ravens’ 11-game streak in 2000 and 2001 and the 49ers’ 10-game streak over 2022 and 2023. They’re four shy of the NFL record of 13 straight games set by the Giants over the 1997 and 1998 seasons. Their streak is the 2nd-longest streak in Eagles history. They had an 11-game streak over the 1987 and 1988 seasons starting with a Week 12 overtime win in New England (the first Eagles game I covered) and continuing through a Week 6 win over the Giants in 1988. That streak ended when they were minus-one in a 19-3 loss to Don Strock and the Browns in Cleveland a week later.
2B. The Eagles are plus-22 during that nine-game span, the first team to be plus-22 over a nine-game stretch since the Patriots in 2011. The last team with a higher plus-minus over nine games was the 2004 and 2005 Bengals, who were plus-25.
2C. The Eagles have forced at least one turnover in 11 straight games, their longest streak since a 14-game span over the 2014 and 2015 seasons. It’s also the longest current streak in the NFL.
2D. With just one turnover in their last eight games, the Eagles are one of just four teams since 1940 to commit one or fewer turnovers in any eight-game span. The 2010 Patriots had one, the 2024-2025 Bills had one and the Chiefs last year became the first team ever with an eight-game stretch with no turnovers.
2E. The Eagles are only the second team in NFL history with at least 19 takeaways and just one turnover in an eight-game span. Those 2010 Patriots had 23 takeaways and one turnover in eight games.
3. Andrew Mukuba, who is 22 years, 281 days, is the youngest Eagle in 53 years with an interception return of at least 40 yards. On Nov. 19, 1972, John Bunting – at 22 years, 127 days – picked off Craig Morton in the Eagles’ 28-7 loss to the Cowboys at the Vet. Bunting was only in the game after the Eagles lost starting linebacker Bob “The Createur” Creech with a knee injury. Makuba is the first Eagle with an INT in his first two career games since Rasul Douglas picked off Eli Manning in Week 2 of 2017 at the Linc. Since 1980, the only other Eagles with an INT this early in their career (not counting the 1987 strike games) are Eric Allen off Vinny Testaverde in his first career game in 1988, Ben Smith off Timm Rosenbach in his second game in 1990 and Nate Allen off Aaron Rodgers in his first game in 2010. Mukuba, who also shared a sack with Za’Darius Smith is the fourth Eagles rookie and first in 18 years with an INT and at least a share of a sack in the same game. Others who did it: Seth Joyner in 1986, Ray Farmer in 1996 and Stewart Bradley in 2007.
4A. Jalen Hurts has completed 75.6 percent of his passes so far this year, highest in Eagles history through two games. Randall Cunningham completed 74.5 percent of his passes through two weeks of the 1992 season.
4B. In just two games, Hurts has lowered his career interception percentage from one every 49.7 attempts to one every 50.9 attempts. He’s moved from 15th to 14th in NFL history in lowest interception ratio, passing former teammate Gardner Minshew.
4C. Since throwing two INTs in São Paulo,on opening day last year, Hurts has thrown 395 passes and two interceptions.
4D. Hurts has thrown 185 consecutive regular-season passes without an interception since Trevon Diggs picked him off in Dallas last November. That’s tied for the 5th-longest streak in Eagles history and 48 shy of the team record of 233, set in 2013 by Nick Foles. Michael Vick had a 224-pass streak in 2010, Carson Wentz a 194-pass streak over the 2019 and 2020 seasons and Donovan McNabb threw 187 straight passes without an INT in 2006. Wentz also had a streak of 185 consecutive passes without an INT in 2019.
5A. Patrick Mahomes has lost two games in his career in which he’s passed for fewer than 190 yards, completed fewer than 56 percent of his passes and thrown at least one interception. One was vs. the Eagles in 2023, the other was vs. the Eagles on Sunday. Mahomes has only had two home games since the middle of 2021 with a passer rating below 73 – 71.6 vs. the Eagles in 2023 and 72.1 on Sunday.
5B. The two longest interception returns off Patrick Mahomes in his last 38 games have been a 38-yarder by Eagles rookie safety Cooper DeJean and a 41-yarder by Eagles rookie safety Andrew Mukuba.
5. It’s the Jake Elliott Section! Let’s GOOOOOOO.
6A. Elliott’s 58-yard field goal at the end of the second quarter was his sixth career field goal of at least 58 yards, 3rd-most in NFL history. He trails only Matt Prater, who’s made 10, and Brandon Aubrey, who’s made eight. Greg Zuerlein also has six. Elliott is 6-for-7 in his career from 58 yards and out for 85.7 percent, best in NFL history by a kicker from at least 58 yards (minimum two attempts). Aubrey is next at 80 percent on 8-for-10, including his game-winning 64-yarder Sunday against the Giants.
6B. Elliott, who also made a 58-yarder against the Cowboys is the first kicker in NFL history to make a field goal of at least 58 yards in each of his team’s first two games. Harrison Butker had two 58-yarders through two weeks of 2020 but they were both in Week 2 in the Chiefs’ win over the Chargers at SoFi Stadium. Only Elliott has made one in both games through Week 2.
6C. Elliott already has two more 50-yarders this year (three) than he had all last year, when he missed his first six before hitting a 50-yarder on the final day of the season against Washington.
6D. Six kickers – Prater, Aubrey, Zuerlein, Elliott, Brett Maher and Harrison Butker – have combined for 40 of the 117 field goals in NFL history from 58 yards and out. That’s six kickers accounting for 34 percent of all the 58-yard field goals ever made.
7. The Eagles averaged just 3.3 yards per pass attempt Sunday, the first time in 16 years they’ve won a game with that low a yards-per-attempt average. In 2009, they beat the Panthers 38-10 in Charlotte, N.C., and averaged just 2.8 yards per attempt. Donovan McNabb started and had 79 passing yards on 18 attempts. After he got hurt, Kevin Kolb had 23 passing yards on 11 attempts and was sacked twice for 20 yards. So they combined for 82 net passing yards on 29 attempts. The Eagles scored 14 of their points in that game on returns – a fumble recovery by Victor Abiamiri and a punt return by DeSean Jackson. They also had 9- and 10-yard touchdown drives and a 1-yard field goal drive.
8A. The Eagles are 18-1 in their last 19 games, tied for the 4th-most wins ever in any 19-game span in NFL history. The Packers went 19-0 over a 19-game span from late in 2010 through late in 2011, and the Patriots had three separate 18-1 stretches over the 2003 through 2004 seasons. The Eagles’ previous-best 19-game span was 17-2 a few times: 1948 and 1949, 1960 and 1961, 2003 and 2004 and last year until last week.
8B. The Eagles’ current eight-game winning streak is the 6th-longest in franchise history but only two short of the team record of 10, set from Week 6 through Week 15 last year. The Eagles also won their first eight games in 2022. They’ve had eight winning streaks of nine or more games in the franchise’s 93-year history and three of the eight have been under Nick Sirianni. They had two under Greasy Neale in the 1940s, one under Buck Shaw in 1960, one under Dick Vermeil in 1980 and two under Andy Reid, in 2003 and 2017. Since 2022, there have only been 10 winning streaks of eight or more games and the Eagles are responsible for three of them. The Chiefs had streaks of 15 straight wins over 2023 and 2024 and eight games over 2022 and 2023 and no other team has had more than one since 2022. The Bills, Bengals, Lions, Vikings and 49ers have each had one.
8C. The Eagles have now won 10 consecutive games vs. the AFC, the 4th-longest winning streak ever by an NFC team vs. the AFC. The Saints won 13 straight from 1987 through 1990 and 11 straight from 2017 through 2019 and the 49ers won 12 straight from 1988 through 1991.
9. Hurts now has a rushing touchdown in five consecutive games, one shy of the franchise record of six straight set by Ricky Watters from Week 10 through Week 15 of the 1995 season. Watters had 10 TDs in those six games. Hurts is also one game short of the NFL record for consecutive games with a rushing touchdown by a quarterback. Justin Fields had six in a row with the Bears in 2022. Hurts has 20 rushing TDs in his last 16 games, the most ever in a 16-game span by a quarterback. The previous record was Hurts’ 19 rushing TDs in a 16-game span ending in Week 1 and also in a 16-game span over the 2022 and 2023 season.
10. This is the sputtering offense section (sorry, we’ve got to do it):
10A. The Eagles’ leading receiver through two games is DeVonta Smith with 69 yards. This is the first time the Eagles haven’t had a player with 70 receiving yards after Week 2 since 1999, when Doug Pederson was their quarterback and their leading receiver after two games was Charles Johnson with 62 yards. Before that it was 1957, when their leading receiver was Bill Stribling with 44 yards.
10B. This is the first time 48 years the Eagles have won consecutive games despite fewer than 250 combined passing yards and no passing touchdowns. Last time it happened was Week 13 and 14 of the 1977 season, with a 17-14 win over the Giants and a 27-0 win over the Jets, both at the Vet. Joe Pisarcik threw for 65 yards against the Giants and Ron Jaworski threw for 144 yards against the Jets. Last time it happened with the same quarterback playing both games was in 1949 in a 22-14 win over the Lions at Briggs Stadium in Detroit and a 28-3 win over the Chicago Cardinals at Shibe Park. Tommy Thompson threw for 101 yards against the Lions and 107 against the Cardinals.
10C. The Eagles’ 518 total yards so far are their fewest after two games since 2003, when they had 513 yards through Week 2 – 245 in a 17-0 loss to the Buccaneers in the first game ever at the Linc and 268 in a 31-10 loss to the Patriots, also at the Linc. Their 4.32 yards per play is also their lowest since 2003, when they averaged 4.01 through Week 2. They’re also averaging 7.0 yards per pass completion, their lowest figure after two games since 1957, when they averaged 5.7. There 1957 again.
