First ODI, New Chandigarh

India 281-7 (50 overs): Rawal 64 (96); Schutt 2-45

Australia 282-2 (44.1 overs): Litchfield 88 (80); Rana 1-51

Australia won by eight wickets; lead three-match series 1-0

Australia thrashed India by eight wickets in a statement win in the first one-day international of a three-match series before the Women’s World Cup.

India, co-hosts with Sri Lanka for the tournament that starts later in September, are the side most likely to challenge the defending champions and started positively by posting 281-7 in New Chandigarh.

Their top three in Pratika Rawal, Smriti Mandhana and Harleen Deol all passed 50 to set a strong platform, including an opening stand of 114, but considering the ease with which Australia reached their target, they were left to rue that none could kick on to three figures.

Seamer Megan Schutt was the pick of the Australian bowlers with 2-45 in her 100th ODI.

Australia lost captain Alyssa Healy for 27 but fellow opener Phoebe Litchfield continued her sparkling form with 88 from 80 balls, including 14 fours, having been dropped in the second over.

There is some concern for Australia though, as star all-rounder Ellyse Perry retired hurt on 30 and only bowled three overs, but Beth Mooney and Annabel Sutherland ensured they cruised to their target with 5.5 overs to spare.

Mooney finished 77 not out from 74 balls and Sutherland made an unbeaten 54 from 51 as they added 116 for the third wicket.

The second ODI takes place at the same venue on Wednesday.

The World Cup begins with India taking on Sri Lanka while Australia’s title defence starts against New Zealand on 1 October.
