Rob Font still sees incentive in fighting Raul Rosas Jr.

Font (22-8 MMA, 12-7 UFC) was scheduled to face Rosas Jr. in Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 259 (ESPN+) co-main event at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Texas, but Rosas Jr. withdrew due to a rib injury.

It took only two days for the promotion to replace Rosas Jr. with David Martinez (12-1 MMA, 1-0 UFC), but Font would like to revisit the matchup after.

“He called me out. He obviously wanted to fight, and then when Dominick Cruz pulled out from the fight in Seattle, his name got thrown into the mix, it didn’t happen,” Font told MMA Junkie Radio of Rosas Jr. “I’ve been hearing his name for a while, and I do like the matchup. I do like the hype that’s going on behind this kid right now.

“He has a big buzz, he has a big following. It’s still kind of an opportunity. Obviously he’s not ranked – he’s not in the top 15. It’s a fight that excites me. It’s not a fight that necessarily moves me forward as far as up the rankings, but it definitely interests me. Hopefully he’s not too injured and we can rebook this fight.”

Font is no stranger to opponent switch-ups, so didn’t hesitate too much when accepting to fight Martinez – who not only has a different style than Rosas Jr., but less of a name.

“Tyson (Chartier) sent me a video the other day about how many times my opponents switched, I think altogether it was nine opponents,” Font said. “Even on the local scene, I got used to getting prepared for everything and not necessarily focus on what my opponent is going to do. So, it wasn’t a big deal for me to switch up because I’m always boxing, I’m always grappling, and obviously always wrestling as much as possible.

“It wasn’t that big of a switch-up for me. If anything, the fight became more straightforward. We know exactly what he wants to do. I’m not saying he’s not going to try and take me down, but he’s definitely not going to try and take me down as much as Rosas would have tried. But I’m prepared for that as well.”
