If you ever questioned what the Ryder Cup means to the players who get to compete in it, then Tyrrell Hatton’s press conference on Wednesday at the BMW PGA Championship is required viewing.
Hatton was asked how he celebrated the news that he’d automatically qualified for a spot on Team Europe in the 2025 Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black. He responded by saying he “wouldn’t go into detail,” then proceeded to talk for four minutes about the wild night.
Hatton’s hilarious description of the “bit of a tear-up” had by he and fellow Ryder Cupper Jon Rahm, who was fresh off winning LIV Golf’s individual championship, went viral Wednesday and it’s very much worth your time.
Six glasses of wine, several cocktails consumed like shots, a margarita and “some sort of strawberry vodka thing” led to Hatton waking up in a mess of his own vomit on the bed of his hotel room. Like a scene straight out “The Hangover” (minus the tiger, probably).
Hatton said he was sure to clean up after himself in hopes of making life a little easier for the hotel staff, although he still left a cash tip and a note telling them to throw the sheets away.
“I feel like I did the right thing upon leaving, but I was in a pretty bad state.”
Needless to say, getting selected for the Ryder Cup is a big deal, even if you’re Tyrell Hatton and you’ve already played in the international grudge match three times before.
Was the raucous celebration a sign of things to come if the Europeans can retain the Ryder Cup on foreign soil at Bethpage in a few weeks? Eh, maybe not, according to the Englishman.
“I don’t want to feel that bad the next day. That was aggressive … I don’t ever want to get to that state again to be honest.”
Hatton, alongside 10 other members of Team Europe, is set to compete in the 2025 BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth Club in England as a Ryder Cup tune-up of sorts. Hatton was winless on LIV Golf this season but made the cut at all four majors and finished top 10 at both the PGA Championship and the U.S. Open.
