After three years of watching the Philadelphia Eagles’ offense have all the fun with their “tush push,” the defense took an opportunity to celebrate a key turnover with their choreographed “brotherly shove.”
With the Dallas Cowboys driving toward a touchdown in their season-opening matchup on Thursday, Eagles linebacker Jihaad Campbell forced a fumble at the 10-yard line by running back (and former Eagle) Miles Sanders. Quinyon Mitchell picked up the fumble for Philadelphia and might have run it back for a touchdown had Dak Prescott not tackled him.

Preventing the Cowboys from either taking the lead or cutting the deficit to 24-23 was plenty of reason for the Eagles’ defense to celebrate. And with attention squarely on them after making an impact play, the unit acknowledged the moment by lining up and emulating the notorious short-yardage play that Jalen Hurts and the Philadelphia offensive line have elevated far beyond a simple quarterback sneak.
Lined up behind Cooper DeJean pretending to play center, Mitchell pushed his way into the end zone for an imaginary touchdown. That provided some consolation for being deprived of a possible real score by Prescott’s tackle.
Good form. The guys must have practiced the play during training camp and preseason.

The celebration became even more memorable with the game going into a weather delay soon thereafter due to lightning in the area. Instead of quickly moving on to the next play, the Eagles’ latest “tush push” played repeatedly on social media and was savored as a clever expression of revelry for a bunch of players who don’t often get to show off in such a fashion.
With an expected delay of at least an hour, the appreciation for this particular “tush push” could grow significantly and set the bar for defensive celebrations — not just for the Eagles, but for defenses throughout the NFL.
