  • Cameron Young grew up in Garrison and lived on a residence at Sleepy Hollow Country Club where his father was the longtime golf professional.
  • Young has had seven top 10 finishes this season.
  • Six U.S. team spots are determined by Ryder Cup points and six are determined by the captain’s picks.

There was a very familiar name to the Westchester golf scene as U.S. Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley made his six Ryder Cup captain’s picks on Aug. 27.

Cameron Young, who grew up in Garrison and formerly resided in Scarborough, will be the New York presence on the team that will compete in the biennial competition between the U.S. and Europe at the 45th Ryder Cup Sept. 26-28 at Bethpage Black on Long Island.

Young joins teammates Justin Thomas, Collin Morikawa, Ben Griffin, Patrick Cantlay and Sam Burns as captain’s picks. The six players who qualified for the U.S. team via Ryder Cup points are Scottie Scheffler, J.J. Spaun, Xander Schauffele, Russell Henley, Harris English and Bryson DeChambeau.

Here’s a few things to know about Cameron Young and the Ryder Cup.

Cameron Young was raised in Westchester, but moved around for his golf career

Young, 28, grew up in Garrison, but moved to a residence at Sleepy Hollow Country Club where his father David was the longtime head professional. He attended Fordham Prep and often spent winters in Florida working on his game.

“I think the streets of New York is probably a stretch,” Young responded to a question about growing up on the streets of New York at a British Open media availability in 2022. “Fordham Prep is on (the) Fordham University campus. It’s beautiful. And I lived at Sleepy Hollow Country Club, where my dad is the head pro. I lived on the lower course out there. I took the train to school, but I also took the train back home to practice. It might sound a little improbable, but I’ve been around golf my whole life. That’s just kind of what I do.”

Young, who now lives in Jupiter, Florida, played collegiately at Wake Forest.

How is Cameron Young playing this season?

Per GolfWeek, Young is one of the hottest golfers of late. He won the Wyndham Championship last month for his first PGA Tour win. He placed fifth, 11th and tied for fourth in the three FedEx Cup playoff events.

He was 14th in Ryder Cup points, but he once held the course record at Bethpage Black, shooting a 64 and winning the New York Open in 2017, the first amateur to win that title. He shot a 62 at the Tour Championship.

Young played on the junior Ryder Cup team in 2014.

In GolfWeek, Bradley said of Young: “Cam has been one of the most consistent players on the Tour. He broke through with that amazing win at the Wyndham Championship, and he’s been fighting so hard. Watching him on Sunday with that big lead play like that was incredible. Cameron is a New Yorker. He won the New York State Open at Bethpage Black as an amateur, set the course record on that day with 64. Cameron pounds the golf ball, and he’s putting it as good as he’s ever putted in his career. He’s had nine top-12 finishes, which shows you how consistent he’s been. We’re very proud to have a New Yorker on our team and represent his country at Bethpage Black.”

How many top 10 finishes has Cameron Young had and how much money has he earned this season?
