The Miami Dolphins failed to capitalize on their 2023 success last season. Injuries to key players — including quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and wideout Tyreek Hill — helped sink the team to 8-9 and a missed playoff appearance.

It was a disappointing performance, though not one that necessarily indicates a full-on collapse is coming. Unfortunately, one angry fan didn’t take a rational route to that decline, emailing team general manager Chris Grier hoping his kids would die of cancer.

Grier spoke about that email Wednesday.

Grier made sure to point out that most fans have been positive and respectful, particularly during in-person encounters. But he added that he’s received “colorful” emails, including one in which a fan hoped Grier’s children die of cancer. He said he tries not to take those emails seriously.

The Dolphins enter the 2025 season looking for a higher win total. After undergoing multiple offseason surgeries, Hill is healthy to start the year. Star running back De’Von Achane, who battled a calf injury during training camp, is also expected to play in Week 1.

As long as Tagovailoa remains on the field, the Dolphins have pieces to suggest they can contend in the AFC East once again. That’s not a guarantee, as Tagovailoa has missed time in two of the last three seasons due to concussions.

Grier’s email is, unfortunately, not the first time in 2025 that a fan has gone too far with threats. In May, Houston Astros pitcher Lance McCullers Jr. revealed he received death threats aimed at his children after he had a poor start. Police reportedly found those threats came from an overseas bettor.

It’s unclear whether Grier informed — or plans to involve — law enforcement after receiving that email.
