Leading up to the 2025 NHL trade deadline, Buffalo Sabres forward JJ Peterka was creating plenty of chatter as a trade candidate. With the Sabres having another extremely disappointing season, Peterka generated interest.
During a March 6 appearance on Amazon Prime’s Coast to Coast, NHL insider Frank Seravalli reported that the New York Rangers made a “significant offer” for Peterka and had “advanced discussions” with the Sabres about the young star. However, once the deadline passed, Peterka remained a Sabre and did not get dealt to the Rangers or any other club.
While the Sabres likely could have gotten a big return for Peterka in a potential trade, they made the right choice holding onto him. With the Sabres looking to take that next step, trading a 23-year-old forward who only continues to improve would not have helped things on that front.
Peterka has been one of the Sabres’ best players all season. In 60 games this season, the Munich native has 19 goals and has already set new career-highs with 32 assists and 51 points. It would not have been easy for the Sabres to replace that kind of production. This is especially so when noting that he is young enough where he still has time to get even better.
It will be intriguing to see how Peterka performs after not being dealt by the Sabres at the deadline. It has already been a career year for the youngster.
