Two former Vancouver Canucks defensemen were traded on Wednesday afternoon, as Vincent Desharnais and Luke Schenn were moved before the March 7 Trade Deadline. Desharnais, formerly with the Pittsburgh Penguins, was moved to the San Jose Sharks in exchange for a 2028 fifth-round pick. Schenn will appear to replace Desharnais in Pittsburgh, as he and Tommy Novak were traded from the Nashville Predators to the Penguins in exchange for Michael Bunting.

The Canucks traded Desharnais barely over a month ago as part of a package to obtain Marcus Pettersson and Drew O’Connor. Initially, Desharnais was signed by Vancouver during the 2024 free-agency period. He played 34 games with the Canucks and put up three assists. During his 10 game stint with Pittsburgh, he averaged 14:24 minutes on ice. Drafted in the seventh round of the 2016 NHL Draft by the Edmonton Oilers, Desharnais didn’t make his NHL debut until January 11, 2023. He spent 114 games with the Oilers before heading to Vancouver.
Schenn has not worn a Canucks uniform since 2023, but he is still thought of positively by the fanbase. Having spent two different stretches of time in Vancouver, Schenn became a fan-favourite for his big hits and veteran presence in the locker room. In his 139 games spent with the Canucks, Schenn registered 40 points.
The first time Schenn played for the Canucks was in the 2018–19 season, after he was traded from the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for Michael Del Zotto. After finishing the season with Vancouver, he signed a two-year deal with the Tampa Bay Lightning, winning two Stanley Cups in his time as a member of the Lightning. He came back to Vancouver in July 2021, spending two seasons with his former team. The Canucks flipped Schenn to the Toronto Maple Leafs before the 2023 NHL Trade Deadline, marking the end of his time with Vancouver (so far).
