It looks like the Pittsburgh Penguins will be short a blueliner heading into their three-game Western road trip this week.
Defenseman P.O Joseph – 23rd overall pick of the Arizona Coyotes in 2017 – was placed on injured reserve Monday.
Joseph, 25, appeared to have been injured during Saturday’s 3-2 loss to the Boston Bruins when he was hit by Bruins forward Mark Kastelic. Kastelic’s hit came in response to an earlier hit by Joseph on Bruins star forward Brad Marchand, who is currently out for Boston with an upper-body injury.
Joseph – in the midst of his second stint with the Penguins – was re-acquired by the Penguins on Dec. 18 in a trade with the St. Louis Blues. He was originally acquired during the summer of 2018 as part of the deal that sent Phil Kessel to Arizona.
The 6-foot-2, 182-pound left defenseman has three points in 47 games this season and eight goals and 40 points in 194 games played.
With Joseph being sent to injured reserve, a spot has opened up on the Penguins’ roster. A subsequent move could be announced Tuesday.
