The Vancouver Canucks have become notorious for making big trades ahead of the deadline as of late. Since President of Hockey Operations, Jim Rutherford, and General Manager Patrik Allvin have entered the management crew, the Canucks have conducted their big trades towards the end of January every year. With the Canucks’ self-imposed trade deadline now over, let’s take a look at every trade the team has made since last year’s actual trade deadline.

To Nashville Predators:

D Mark Friedman
Vancouver’s most recent trade took place before the 4 Nations Face-Off, when the team sent defenseman Mark Friedman to the Nashville Predators in exchange for future considerations. This was the second time this season that the Canucks traded a player in exchange for future considerations. Vancouver’s management has a history of moving on from players quickly if they don’t think the fit is there, and this is one of many examples occurring throughout this list.

To Pittsburgh Penguins
This was the second trade the Canucks conducted on January 31, 2025, and came after the team’s biggest trade on this list by far. Vancouver upped their roster massively with the additions of Marcus Pettersson and Drew O’Connor, the former of which has been strong on the team’s blueline. The conditional 1st round pick could prove to be the biggest thing Vancouver gave up, as if the New York Rangers (who they got the pick from) end up as part of this year’s draft lottery, then the pick becomes unprotected in 2026 — the year that star prospect Gavin McKenna becomes eligible for the NHL Draft.

After a tumultuous stretch of time, the Canucks finally traded J.T. Miller on January 31, 2025. This came a couple of weeks after trade rumours that claimed Miller would be going to the team he was drafted by back in 2011. The Miller trade was one component of Vancouver’s deadline splash — but this doesn’t mean that they’re done quite yet.

To Seattle Kraken:

Before the Miller trade, the Canucks made some smaller-scale moves in their lineup. The team moved on from free agency signing Daniel Sprong after a disappointing start to the season, giving him to Seattle in exchange for future considerations.

2025 4th Round Pick
With only three days before the start of the season, the Canucks moved Tucker Poolman and part of his salary to the Avalanche, acquiring Erik Brännström in return. Brännström provided a puck-moving presence, but didn’t end up getting into the lineup much due to his play style differing from what is expected from Canucks head coach Rick Tocchet.

To Edmonton Oilers:
-
F Vasily Podkolzin
The 10th overall selection in the 2019 NHL Draft, Vasily Podkolzin was one of the Canucks’ top prospects once upon a time. However, since making his NHL debut, he hadn’t quite lived up to the team’s expectations. He was moved to Edmonton during the offseason and has since filled in a depth role on the Oilers. Currently, Podkolzin has six goals and 14 assists in 57 games played.

F Sam Lafferty
-
2027 2nd Round Pick
Vancouver’s last trade since last year’s trade deadline was when they sent Ilya Mikheyev and Sam Lafferty to the Blackhawks in what was seen as a cap dump for Mikheyev. After a disappointing 2023–24 season for Mikheyev, the team felt the need to move on. Lafferty ultimately ended up signing with the Buffalo Sabres in free agency.
