The Buffalo Sabres are at the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings as we continue to inch closer to the NHL trade deadline. With this, it is apparent that they won’t be in the market for rentals. However, at the same time, they should not be against adding to their roster if it benefits them beyond this season.
When looking at potential trade targets around the NHL, one player who immediately should grab the Sabres‘ attention is St. Louis Blues forward Jordan Kyrou.
Kyrou, 26, has been the subject of trade rumors over the last month, and it has been increasing with the deadline one week away. NHL insider Nick Kypreos included Kyrou on his latest trade board for Sportsnet, noting that the Blues GM Doug Armstrong is considering “changing over the core group.”
With the Sabres desperately needing another impactful top-six forward, Kyrou could be a major addition to their roster if acquired. The Toronto, Ontario native is once again having a strong season in 2024-25, posting 24 goals, 47 points, and a plus-12 rating in 59 games. With this, he is on pace for his third consecutive season with at least 30 goals and fourth with at least 65 points. His best year so far was in 2021-22, when he had 75 points in 74 games.
If acquired, Kyrou would be far more than a rental for the Sabres. He is signed until the end of the 2030-31 season, carrying a $8.125 million cap hit. He also does not have any trade protection for this campaign before he gets a no-trade clause starting next season. Thus, if the Sabres want him, now would be the right time to target him.
Overall, with the Sabres needing more skill, bringing in a top-six forward right in their prime like Kyrou would be massive.
