Mitchell Robinson expected to return during Knicks’ two-game weekend road trip

Mitchell Robinson is expected to make his return during the Knicks’ two-game road trip this weekend against the Memphis Grizzlies and Miami Heat, sources tell SNY NBA Insider Ian Begley.

Robinson has been sidelined since Game 1 of New York’s second round series loss to the Pacers last season.

The big man underwent surgery to repair a foot injury this offseason, and his timeline for a return has been very vague. New York has been taking a cautious approach over the past few weeks to ensure that he would be 100 percent healthy when he does return.

Robinson has been progressing well in practice after being cleared for contact at the beginning of the month, and it appears that he is now ready to finally make his way off the injury report and back onto the court.

His return certainly comes at a perfect time for New York, as their center depth is about to be put to the test.

They were already playing shorthanded with All-Star Karl-Anthony Towns dealing with a knee issue, and now rookie center Ariel Hukporti is expected to be sidelined for several week with a suspected torn meniscus.

It may take Robinson some time to get into a rhythm and regain his conditioning, but there’s no denying that having him back will be a huge boost on both ends of the court.

Prior to the injury, the 26-year-old was averaging 5.6 points and 8.5 rebounds per game.
