Jets GM Darren Mougey and head coach Aaron Glenn spoke on Tuesday at the NFL Combine.
Here are the key things to know…
On the Aaron Rodgers decision
Mougey opened his news conference by saying he wanted to address the Rodgers situation first, and said that there was no “ultimatum or rules of engagement” given to Rodgers about what would’ve been required of him had the Jets retained him.
The GM also suggested Rodgers would be a post-June 1 cut.
“[Aaron Glenn] and I had a lot of dialogue, a lot of conversations, a lot of really good thoughts, and just felt at the end of the day it was the best thing for the Jets moving forward just going in a different direction at the quarterback position,” Mougey explained.
“A lot of respect for Aaron Rodgers as a player and person. First-ballot Hall-of-Famer, wish him nothing but the best. But that was the decision we made, and look forward to kind of moving past that and into this next process here with free agency and the draft.”
Speaking after Mougey, Glenn weighed in on how the choice to move on from Rodgers might have irked some of his players.
“Every decision that me and [Mougey] make is to win, and win now. This isn’t going to be the last decision I make that will upset some people, and that’s okay.”
The Jets have Tyrod Taylor ready to step in as the starter if they don’t make a move for a quarterback in the draft, or via free agency or trade.
The draft plan
New York holds the No. 7 pick in April’s draft, and Mougey said they’re open to all avenues — staying put, trading up, or trading back.
It’s hard to imagine either Cam Ward or Shedeur Sanders will still be available when the Jets pick (unless they trade up to the top 3), but other opportunities exist if their plan is to land a quarterback in the draft.
One could be taking a shot on Ole Miss QB Jaxson Dart, whether it means trading up a few slots or staying put.
The futures of Davante Adams and Allen Lazard
Mougey would not reveal much about the plan with Adams and Lazard, but he seemed to give a hint about the Jets’ strategy by how short and surgical his answers about them were.
On Adams: “Davante is on the team right now. Obviously we have a plan there, and in the next few weeks we’ll kind of address that issue. But Davante is on the team.”
On Lazard: “I’m well aware of their contract situations, and those are things we’ll address in the coming weeks.”
Adams was brought in last season in large part because of his relationship with Rodgers.
The same can be said about the addition of Lazard, who was also a Rodgers favorite.
And the presence of those receivers seemingly irked top receiver Garrett Wilson.
It will be an upset if both Adams and Lazard aren’t former Jets in the coming weeks.
